Physical Description Gene is a small-built, slender male with bushy auburn hair and thick upturned Vulcan brows. He has quite large, brown eyes, Vulcan-pricked ears and freckled complexion. His short height comes in handy when it comes to navigating the jefferies tube, but it also allows him to hide in a crowd when he needs to.

Gene’s lack of inclination to command a room means that his posture is far from straight; a bit more hunched than he would care to admit.
Due to his priority over his work, his uniform and hair are usually ruffled, wrinkled, but not entirely untidy. Gene usually adopts a nonchalant, if lightly furrowed expression, honed in on his work or mulling over problems in his mind. Raised a farm-hand, one could argue its how he treats his surroundings sometimes, lacking punctuality when it came to keeping his station clear.

Fitness is far from Gene’s schedule; he was known as a scrawny-kid growing up, and he hasn’t changed much from that label. He has better things to do with his time.

Gene’s familial roots stemmed back before World war 3, a family of New Yorkers, an accent that has carried through after all these years. His mother had a bit of one, and Gene adopted this slight accent by proxy. His diction can be brash, due to his, at times, volatile nature, but in front of superior officers he tries to be on his best behaviour.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Gene is a brash, hot-headed and determined engineer. His emotions run wild sometimes, but his sense of humor and curious mind make him a great addition to any collaborative situation.

Upon first impression, Gene is often guarded, defensive, but he is unwaveringly loyal once he warms to someone. In times of crisis, he zones in; the pressure fuels his ability to work and problem solve. This however, can lead to Gene being silent when trying to contact him on the coms.

Due to his internal, highly emotional state, Gene can sometimes be unpredictable; happy and joyous one moment, and inexplicably enraged the next. He has always tried to control this aspect of himself, but it’s an ongoing struggle. Despite this unpredictability, he yearns to be close to people, used to that familial closeness growing up. He tries to repress this part of himself though, as he knows his emotional outbursts can offend people. It can be easier to not get too attached.

Gene’s motivations are unclear to him. He knows he wants to serve, to fix, to help; it’s what he’s always done; he has always been a caretaker. His obsessions with the inner workings of machinery also drive his work, but he has yet to confront his true purpose in Starfleet.
When it comes to authority, Gene can have trouble. He finds it extremely difficult to hide his emotions, his expressions being a clear indicator to his true feelings. This can get him into trouble when he has a conflicting opinion to a higher-ranking officer. He does try his best to repress this though, and will usually stay silent and dutiful as possible.

Gene has quite a flourishing sense of humor. He’s particularly sarcastic and dry in conversation, and he can’t help but laugh when something amuses him. However, as he is always trying to keep his emotions more reserved; he does hold back as much as possible.

Failure is not an option in Gene’s mind; he’s a perfectionist, determined to get it right every time. Obviously, this is not always possible, meaning this leads to personal meltdowns and outbursts that he tried to hide from other team members. Other team members may see this in Gene’s pouty, scowling expression that he often wears.

Gene respects intelligence and authority in others, but is also threatened by it. He will try and match it, almost competitively. It never seems to end well. Overall though, Gene doesn’t discriminate, it may take time for him to open up, but he will bond to almost anyone.
Gene is a hopeful guy and surprisingly, he believes change can be achieved. He may be untrusting and guarded around those he doesn’t respect, but he will never fully write them off. He thinks everyone deserves a second chance. His mother often told him that when he faced bullying around his half-Vulcan appearance in his childhood.

Gene hates people stereotyping him; it's a common occurrence of course, given what an unlikely half-vulcan he is. In that same breath, Gene also dislikes using his vulcan abilities, they are basically nonexistent due to his lack of practice. Gene also hates public speaking, any sort of leadership role for himself, and he hates space docks.

Fears include heights, solitude, too much responsibility and blood or gore of any kind. He is useless in a medical bay. These are of course where his weaknesses lie; his preferred position is in Engineering, in the background where he knows his way around.
Deep in his core, however, his fears align with abandonment. He desperately wants, needs to be liked, accepted.
Strengths & Weaknesses Gene is a huge fan of Starships; their history, structure and inner workings. Gene also enjoys history and culture in general, always interested in learning more. Earth animals are also extremely fascinating to him; but he is less likely to divulge this information.

Gene’s strengths lie in his engineering knowhow and determination to get the job done; he will find a way no matter what. His strong loyalty is also a great asset to any team.

Ambitions Gene would love to be a chief Engineer someday, however his fear of command halts that ambition in its tracks. For now, he’d like to keep his head down and roll with the punches.
Hobbies & Interests Gene loves collecting model ships and figurines of Earth Animals.
He is fascinated by weaponry, but fears it simultaneously. He often tries them out in safe invironments like the Holodeck. Gene’s favourite holodeck programme is a Nordic-Wildlife experience; he will take any opertunity to learn more about animal species, especially Earth's.
Gene isn't much into sports, but he loves to swim and hike.
Gene is a huge fan of Vulcan chess, but is embarrassed about his low success rate.

Personal History Gene was born on Earth in North America. He was raised on his grandmother’s farm with his mother, who was a mechanic. He learned a lot about machinery for the farm growing up there, and cherished the close family bond he had with his mother and grandma. Gene was told by his mother that his father was Vulcan, a starfleet officer who visited earth years ago. Apparently they had a whirlwind romance and he had left before he knew she was pregnant.
Therefore, Gene had very little connection to his Vulcan roots. However, Gene still felt the effects. He felt emotions very strongly, too strong for his liking a lot of the time; but his mother had taught him ways of calming himself down through human self care methods. Perhaps not as effective. But Gene was fine with this; he defends that it “gives him a personality at least”.
Service Record Gene enrolled into Starfleet Academy Earth in 2400, specializing in propulsion systems and components engineering. He had joined up a lot later than he had planned due to his willingness to help out his mother on the farm after his grandmother died, but after she adjusted, she encouraged Gene to follow his ambition.

He adjusted quickly in the programme, quickly advancing and excelling in his courses, already being very familiar with the material. He struggled, however, in relations and collaboration with his crewmates. This is an area he had been determined to develop further on in his career.
Gene graduated with commendations in Advanced Warp Systems and System Design.

The U.S.S. Albion will be the first Starship Gene has served on.
